Student Accountability & Empowerment Program™
Suspension is often the prescribed route taken when a student gets caught using a substance, such as vaping, at school. The problem with this is you cannot suspend your way out of an addiction or underlying mental health issue.
Points to Consider:
Research has shown that staying connected to school and accessing support services is vital for long-term well-being and that suspension increases student absenteeism without addressing the root cause of use.
Even the National Education Association (NEA) agrees in its NEA News’ September 10, 2021 article: School Suspensions Do More Harm than Good
A couple of top take-a-ways from the article include:
1. A new study adds to a growing body of evidence that suspensions, in most cases, are ineffective.
2. Restorative justice approaches continue to show positive effect on school climate and in reducing suspensions.
Most restorative justice/alternative to suspension programs only educate students about their substance of choice. Education about the harmful effects is a small piece of the puzzle in making lasting change.
The Student Accountability & Empowerment Program™ is an award-winning alternative to suspension program that does more than just educate students about their substance of choice. It also incorporates areas into the program that will maximize positive long-term outcomes and change the student’s current trajectory for the better.
